We will look at what Applied Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed are: how they are used to help us understand ourselves and others, as well as the community in which we live. We will develop an advanced understanding of the ways in which these techniques can be used to build dialogue with groups in the wider community and among students. Participants will develop an informed awareness of the issues involved in applied theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed and an appreciation of what it means to be responsive in this context, as well as gaining a critical awareness of the skills necessary for effective facilitation in this field. The principles of Augusto Boal and Theatre of the Oppressed will be used. These will be practical workshops on devising, adapting and creating narrative structures.
